Muroto Misaki Lighthouse Festival
Japanese name:室戸岬灯台まつり
📅 Sat, Oct 31, 2026 - Sun, Nov 1, 2026
About this event
This event highlights the history and cultural value of Muroto Misaki Lighthouse, a symbol of Muroto City. Held in conjunction with Lighthouse Day on November 1, the interior of the lighthouse, normally closed to the public, will be opened for public viewing. There are also designated time slots during which the lighthouse interior is specially opened at night. The event aims to raise broad awareness of the importance of lighthouses and to foster familiarity with the work of the Muroto Misaki Weather Station, which conducts meteorological observations day and night. Famous spots around Cape Muroto, such as Hotsumisakiji Temple associated with Kobo Daishi (Kukai), will also be introduced. Built to safeguard important shipping lanes off Cape Muroto, the lighthouse has supported vessel navigation safety for over 100 years since it was first lit on April 1, 1899 (Meiji 32). It offers a rare opportunity to explore its historical background and vital role.
