On Sunday, November 1, 2026 (Reiwa 8), the '12th Sukumo 'Gure' Paradise Cup: Okinoshima & Ugurujima Gure Fishing Open' will be held to signal the opening of the rock fishing season in Okinoshima and Ugurujima. This tournament is entered in pairs of two people, competing for the length of a single gure (largescale blackfish) measuring 35 cm or more in length. As prizes, 200,000 yen in gift certificates is prepared for the champion, 100,000 yen for the runner-up, and 60,000 yen for 3rd place, and an enjoyable lottery where luxurious prizes can be won will also be held. In the tournament, 7 ferry boats of Okinoshima and Ugurujima will be chartered, recruiting 105 pairs / 210 people. The participation fee is 17,000 yen per person, which includes ferry boat fee, bento lunch box, prize fund, insurance fee, 2 bags of boiled krill (boil), and 1 bag of akami (krill paste). For the weigh-in method, the top pair from each ferry boat proceeds to the weigh-in, and the pair that caught the longest gure among them will be the winner. In case of a tie in length, the ranking is decided by weight. The tournament assembly point is in front of the Ferry Boat Association Parking Lot at Katashima Port in Sukumo City, with reception starting at 4:00 AM, departure at 5:30 AM, rod retrieval and pickup at 1:30 PM, and the awards ceremony and lottery starting at 2:30 PM. Bait that can be used in this tournament is limited to boiled krill and akami only. The tournament may be canceled due to weather or other reasons.
