About this event
Designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of Hidaka Village, the 'Hanatori Dance' (Hanatori Odori) is said to have originated in the Edo period as a prayer for bountiful harvests. Also known as the 'Uchiwa Dance' (Uchiwa Odori), the highlight is the dancing with large red folding fans fluttering in the air. Transmitted since ancient times at Okina Sho Hachimangu Shrine (Hachiman Shrine), it consists of 12 dance patterns, each accompanied by a song. The exquisite technique of swinging swords and paper shide streamers is magnificent. It originated in 1329 when the castle lord of Tosa dedicated it to pray for long-lasting military fortune. Around 1540, villagers also began dancing it due to the outbreak of an epidemic, and it has been handed down as a traditional dance ever since.
