About this event
"Hakata Tomyo Watching" is an event organized in collaboration with the Hakata-bu Town Development Council that colors the streets of Hakata with candle lanterns (tomyo). Inspired by the local "Sen-tomyo Festival," which has been passed down for nearly 300 years, tens of thousands of handmade candle lanterns illuminate the night streets of Hakata. Local residents arrange the lanterns around local famous spots, historic sites, temples, shrines, and narrow alleys, creating a fantastical mood illuminated by candle flames that soothes visitors' hearts. This event aims to deepen the bonds of active local residents and bring energy to the town of Hakata. Highlights include gigantic "Lantern Ground Art" using candle lanterns, "Lantern Points" filled with a magical ambiance, and the "Lantern Competition" competing for lantern design ideas. In addition, visitors can enjoy gourmet foods featuring signature local flavors in each area.
