About this event

The Awashima Shrine Grand Festival, held annually on March 3 at Awashima Shrine in Hainuzuka, Chikugo City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is a traditional festival that has continued since the Edo period. At this shrine dedicated to Sukunahikona no Mikoto, known as the deity of medicine and healing spells, Shinto rituals praying for women's health are performed. The main highlight of the festival is the mini torii gates set up on the shrine grounds, measuring 41 cm and 36 cm in width and 35 cm in height. It is said that crawling on one's stomach to pass through these small torii gates brings blessings such as 'healing of gynecological diseases and lower back pain, improved health, being blessed with children, and the healthy growth of children.' Held to coincide with the Peach Festival (Momo no Sekku / Girls' Day), this festival is a special day for people praying for health, safe childbirth, and fertility.
