About this event
This special tour takes you around the sacred Mt. Wakasugi in Sasaguri Town, Fukuoka Prefecture, to view a precious once-a-year night kagura performance. The traditional 'Taiso Kagura,' which has continued since the Edo period and is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Fukuoka Prefecture, can only be seen as a night dedication on this day of the Autumn Grand Festival. On the tour, dressed in white pilgrim attire (byakue) and holding a pilgrim staff (kongotsue), participants will tour the Okunoin of Mt. Wakasugi during an authentic pilgrimage experience guided by a sendatsu (pilgrim guide). Along the way, you can also enjoy sacred rock 'Hasami-iwa,' said since ancient times to only allow good-hearted people to pass, and a panoramic view from the Komenoyama Observation Deck overlooking Fukuoka City to Hakata Bay. In addition, by Yoro Falls, you can spend a serene moment receiving a Buddhist sermon and blessing (okaji) from the chief priest. Starting in the evening, you will watch the mystical 'Taiso Kagura' night kagura for about 1 hour and 30 minutes, including dances such as Sakaki-mai, Hikime-mai, and Shiken-mai. It will be a precious day to forget daily life and peacefully connect with nature and tradition.
