Autumn Foliage of Unzen
Japanese name:雲仙の紅葉
📅 Wed, Oct 21, 2026 - Fri, Nov 20, 2026
About this event
The autumn foliage of Mount Unzen is home to more than 120 species of foliage-bearing plants and is designated as a National Natural Monument (Fugendake Broadleaf Forest) as typical autumn leaves of Western Japan. In late October, the contrast between nature's colors and the deep green firs and Trochodendron creates a vivid landscape worthy of being called "kinshu" (brocade). The leaves of Komine maple, snakebark maple, Siebold's maple, melon maple, and Enkianthus perulatus turn beautifully yellow and red, captivating visitors. To enjoy the view, peaks such as Mount Fugen and Mount Myoken, as well as the Nita Pass Observatory, are recommended. The view from the summit of Mount Kunimi is especially exceptional. Using the Unzen Ropeway from the Nita Pass parking lot, visitors can easily ascend to Mount Myoken at an elevation of 1,333 meters and enjoy expansive views from 1,300 meters above sea level. The typical peak viewing period is from late October to mid-November.
