📅 Sat, Jul 18, 2026 - Sun, Sep 6, 2026
About this event
Kumamoto Museum's summer special exhibition 'The Ice Continent - Antarctica Exhibition' explores the wonders of Antarctica and the history of human challenges there. Visitors can learn about the history of Japanese Antarctic observation, including valuable materials from the Shirase Antarctic Expedition, the first Japanese team to attempt an Antarctic expedition. The venue features numerous exhibits to experience the majestic nature of Antarctica, along with specimens of creatures living around Antarctica such as penguins and seals. There are also exhibits introducing the successive Antarctic research vessels that supported observation efforts, exploring the secrets of Syowa Station, and a corner dedicated to considering the future of the global environment. Furthermore, various events will be held throughout the period, including the special planetarium screening 'Antarctic Starry Sky Adventure!', exhibition commentary by curators, Antarctic architecture hands-on workshops, and lectures by former members of Antarctic observation teams. In particular, on Friday, August 14, a 'Night Museum' will be held with opening hours extended until 21:00, allowing visitors to enjoy the world of Antarctica in a different atmosphere than usual. This exhibition will be a valuable opportunity to discover the unknown aspects of Antarctica and reflect on the future of the Earth's environment.
