About this event

The "6th Hitoyoshi City Kajiyamachi Street Yokai Festival" will be held on Kajiyamachi Street in Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, from Saturday, November 14 to Sunday, November 15, 2026. During this festival, Kajiyamachi Street in Hitoyoshi City—where stone-paved paths and traditional historic townscapes remain—is enveloped in a slightly mysterious world where yokai (Japanese supernatural folklore creatures) gather. Starting at 17:00 on Saturday, November 14, the street becomes a pedestrian-only zone, kicking off the evening festival filled with the presence of yokai throughout town. Set against the historic townscape of Kajiyamachi, various yokai-themed events unfold, highlighted by an impressive procession reminiscent of a fox wedding (kitsune no yomeiri) and the magical atmosphere of yokai emerging in the lamplight. Participating in cosplay or yokai costumes is warmly welcomed on both days, allowing visitors to enjoy themselves in their favorite outfits. On the following day, Sunday, November 15, the "25th Unsun Karuta Tournament," featuring the traditional card game associated with Hitoyoshi, will also be held. The practice session starts at 9:00, and the tournament begins at 13:00. This festival offers a special two-day autumn experience unique to Kajiyamachi, allowing visitors to enjoy the historic streetscape, yokai lore, and local cultural heritage together.
