About this event

This is a precious opportunity to experience "Noh" and "Kyogen," UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage performing arts with over 650 years of history, in Ashikita. It will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026 (Reiwa 8) at the Ashikita Town Citizen General Center (Shiroyama Sky Dome). Prior to the curtain opening, a Gagaku (ancient imperial court music) performance by the Kumamoto Prefecture Shrine Association Gagaku Committee will be presented starting at 2:00 PM, enveloping the venue in a solemn atmosphere. Following that, the Kyogen play "Neongyoku" (Minoru-kai, Shite principal actor: Haruo Tasaka) featuring humorous dialogues, and the Noh play "Tamura" (Kita School Kishukai, Shite principal actor: Yuichi Kano), a heroic tale set at Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto, will be performed. The program is structured to be enjoyable even for first-time viewers of classical performing arts. Additionally, as a collaborative project with Hisatsu Orange Railway, value ticket sets combining a round-trip ticket between JR Kumamoto Station and Sashiki Station with the Noh performance ticket are on sale, with shuttle service available from Sashiki Station to the venue. Please visit Ashikita Town for this opportunity to experience the charm of traditional performing arts up close.
