About this event

This is a memorial festival commemorating the death anniversary of Lord Kato Kiyomasa. The Notsuharu district was formerly part of the Higo domain and flourished as a post town used by Lord Kato Kiyomasa during the sankin-kotai (alternate attendance system). On the day of the festival, paper lanterns are lit throughout the three districts of Notsuharu (Era, Honmachi, Shinmachi), and the streets bustle with numerous visitors and food stalls. Because the mikoshi (portable shrine) stops at approximately 200 households in the town, it departs from Notsuharu Shrine at 10:00 AM and parades late into the night. Along the parade route, there is a scene where the mikoshi is carried into the Nanase River, which is a highlight showcasing its brave and magnificent presence. In the past, large floats equipped with stages also paraded, but this year the mikoshi will be the main focus. At night, excitement peaks during the scene where the mikoshi attempts to mount the grand float's stage upon returning to Notsuharu Shrine. Many people visit to honor "Kiyomasa-ko," the celebrated commander of bravery known for legendary episodes such as the single-hook spear.
