About this event
Boasting a 1200-year tradition, the Gocho-no-Ichi Market, an auxiliary festival of Omiya Hachiman Shrine, is a maritime event praying for safety at sea and a bountiful catch. Middle school boys wearing headbands board boats called Joyara boats decorated with vibrant big-catch flags, dancing bravely as if rowing the boat to the chants of 'Joyara, Joyara'. 'Joyara' is said to be a corruption of the phrase 'Uo are' (meaning 'May there be fish').
