About this event

Held at the square in front of the Sugao Rock-Carved Buddha in Mie-machi, Bungo-ono City, the 'Sugao Rock-Carved Buddha Fire Festival' is a traditional festival aimed at regional revitalization and raising awareness of the Sugao Cliff Buddha (Magaibutsu). The customary 'Rooster Crow Mimicry Contest', based on local legend, fills the venue with smiles as contestants perform their best rooster crow impressions. In addition, visitors can enjoy stage events such as taiko drumming and kagura sacred dance performances. The program runs into the night, starting with Shinto and Buddhist rituals, followed by the Welcoming of the Ogre, Opening Ceremony and Rice Cake Toss, Hoyukai Taiko, Rooster Crow Mimicry Contest, Torch Throwing, and Okuhata Kagura. The 'Rooster Crow Mimicry Contest', tied to a local tale of an ogre and villagers, is a highlight of the festival. Entry to the contest is free, with cash prizes and additional gifts prepared, and participants are currently being sought. Free shuttle taxis will also operate to and from the venue.
