About this event

The Autumn Grand Festival is held every year on the 4th Sunday of September at Tsuinodo Atago Shrine enshrined in Hiji Town, Oita Prefecture. According to tradition, this shrine originated when Ogami no Higi, who founded Usa Hachimangu Shrine, enshrined a deity here, and it has a history of being restored by the Buddhist monk Gyoki in the late Nara period. As the first Atago Shrine in Bungo Province, it has attracted faith from ancient times and has also been revered as the guardian deity of Hiji Castle. The enshrined deities are Izanami no Mikoto and Kagutsuchi no Mikoto. During the Autumn Grand Festival, sacred Kagura dances are dedicated, and the shrine bustles with many worshipers. The Shinto ritual begins at 10:00 AM, and the Shonai Kagura performance begins at 11:00 AM.
