About this event
Held in Hyuga City, Miyazaki Prefecture, the "Hyuga Jugoya Festival" is a traditional festival counted among the Three Major Festivals of Northern Miyazaki Prefecture and the Three Major Festivals of Hyuga. Its roots are said to lie in the rituals of Tomitaka Hachimangu Shrine, founded about 800 years ago. Legend has it that after the Battle of Dan-no-ura, two warlords, Nasu no Yoichi and Kudo Suketsune, who were pursuing the fleeing Heike clan to Shiiba, enshrined a branch deity from Kamakura's Tsurugaoka Hachimangu to build a shrine and boost the morale of their troops, which began the festival rites. Since then, local people have continued the festival to pray for bumper crops and express gratitude for the harvest, passing it down to the modern era. In recent years, various festivities enliven the festival, such as dedicating mitate-zaiku craft displays and flower floats, as well as dance troupes parading through downtown Hyuga City. Held around the time of the harvest moon, this festival is a precious opportunity to experience local history and culture.
