Autumn Foliage at Ebino Plateau
Japanese name:えびの高原の紅葉
📅 Wed, Oct 21, 2026 - Tue, Nov 10, 2026
About this event
Located at an altitude of 1,200 meters on Mount Kirishima, Ebino Plateau is a treasure trove of rich nature spreading across the northern part of Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park, Japan's first national park. In autumn, volcanic crater lakes dotted across the plateau—such as Fudo-ike, Rokkannon-miike, and Byakushi-ike—are colored with vibrant autumn foliage, set against a backdrop of mountains of various sizes including Karakunidake and Koshikidake, which are popular trekking spots. Rokkannon-miike in particular offers breathtaking scenery with the contrast between its cobalt-blue lake surface, characteristic of an acidic lake, and the surrounding broadleaf and coniferous trees. The volcanic landscape and the changing appearance of the lake surface through light reflection throughout the day create a stunning collaboration. Home to the wild deer of Ebino Plateau, selected as one of Japan's 100 Soundscapes, you can enjoy trekking to the fullest while the calls of stags echo through the forest from autumn into winter. After a walk, you can enjoy a variety of activities, including relaxing in hot springs or having a buffet lunch (Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays only) at Ebino Kogen Hotel, dining and shopping at Yama-no-Eki Rindo, or taking a break at Ashiyu-no-Eki Ebino Kogen.
