About this event

Held in Izumi City, the world's leading town for bamboo lanterns, 'Izumi Machi Terrace: Light Festival Connected by Bamboo Lanterns' is a festival of light that illuminates the Satsuma Clan Izumi Fumoto Samurai Residences—one of Japan's largest samurai residence districts retaining the appearance of a town from about 400 years ago—with more than 50,000 bamboo lanterns, a number on the same scale as the city's population. In 2016, it achieved two world records for the 'Longest line of bamboo lanterns' and the 'Largest bamboo lantern display.' Bamboo lanterns are also lit and displayed along streets extending from near Izumi Station to Izumi Fumoto, allowing visitors to enjoy an extraordinary atmosphere unique to Machi Terrace. In 2026, marking its 12th edition, in addition to the bamboo lantern displays at Izumi Fumoto Samurai Residences and Motomachi Shopping Street, the 'Izumi Fumoto Night Cinema Circuit' project will also be carried out. This is a 'circuit-style film festival' touring historical spaces, where the main feature film serving as the event's core will be screened at Izumi Fumoto History Museum, the main stage. Takezoe Residence and Suwa Shrine have been selected as sub-venues, where publicly submitted short films will be screened on their premises.
