Japanese name:第121回笠利町招魂祭相撲大会
📅 Sun, Oct 11, 2026
About this event
This is a traditional sumo tournament held in Kasari-cho, Amami City. Held in conjunction with the "Shokon-sai" to memorialize the war dead of the First Sino-Japanese, Russo-Japanese, and Pacific Wars, it marks its 121st edition. Open to people connected to Kasari-cho through residence, work, or school, the tournament features team competitions by elites representing their respective villages, as well as individual matches. Serving as a venue to witness children's growth, the dohyo ring wrapped in passionate cheers from local residents captivates all spectators. Wrestlers across a wide range of age groups, from preschoolers to junior high school students and adults, compete in their techniques, carrying on a tradition rooted in the community. On Amami Oshima in October when the summer heat begins to subside, this tournament that fires up the hearts of the Shimanchu (Amami locals) is full of charm that even those unfamiliar with sumo can enjoy.
