About this event
Held on Takeshima in Mishima Village, Kagoshima Prefecture, the village revitalization volunteer program "Satsuma Takeshima Course, Schedule B" is a travel-like volunteer program participating in projects to revitalize a small island with a population of only 55. Participants engage in local tasks such as DIY renovation of vacant houses, exploring ways to utilize bamboo, thinning bamboo groves, and cleaning roads. Geared toward young people, primarily university students, junior high school students up to around their 20s can participate according to the organizer's request. Run in small groups, first-timers and solo participants can join with peace of mind. The participation fee includes food costs during the stay and insurance. Surrounded by Takeshima's rich nature, connecting with the lifestyle of island caretaker Shinsaku Yamazaki and deeply blending into the local daily life lets participants experience "tangible living" and a "real sense of being alive" unobtainable in the hustle and bustle of the city. In particular, through utilizing the island's specialty Daimyo bamboo and multi-generational exchanges with islanders, it provides an opportunity to reflect on one's values and discover a new perspective. Savor the island's daily life with all five senses, including catching, filleting, and eating fish, and supporting the traditional Bon Odori dance. Far beyond simple work experience, this volunteer program offers a precious, life-defining experience that allows participants to feel connected with people, society, and themselves.
