About this event
Shodon Shibaya is a traditional performing art held at Otonton Shrine in Shodon, Setouchi Town, Oshima District, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is said to have originated when Taira no Sukemori and his party, who fled to Kakeroma Island in Amami Oshima after losing the Genpei War, introduced it to deepen exchanges with the local people. Designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, its historical background and cultural value are highly acclaimed. The performers consist entirely of men, who wear paper masks and woven hats, performing to the accompaniment of hayashi music and shamisen. While there were once more than 20 programs, 11 programs—including impromptu kyogen and puppet shows—are passed down today. In particular, the unique play danced while wearing paper masks is a major highlight of Shodon Shibaya. Mainly performed on the 9th day of the 9th month of the lunar calendar, this traditional performing art is a precious event that strongly reflects the local culture.
