About this event

The Kawayu Shrine Annual Grand Festival, held in Teshikaga Town, Hokkaido, takes place every year from August 27 to 29. One of the highlights of the festival is the mikoshi (portable shrine) procession through the town on the 28th. Nursery school children as well as elementary and junior high school students energetically carry their own portable shrines, enlivening the community. In addition, the powerful melodies of Kawayubayashi, a local traditional performing art of Kawayu, further energize the festival. Since its first performance in 1972 (Showa 47), this traditional art has been performed at various events in Teshikaga Town with a long history, carefully passed down by local residents. With the earth-shaking rumble of Japanese drums, the children's dedicated performances, and the resonant sounds of Japanese flutes and bells, it has become a seasonal tradition that brings Eastern Hokkaido's short summer to a close. The performance against the backdrop of Mount Io, combined with the magnificent scenery, creates a breathtaking spectacle. The festival bustles with locals and tourists alike, filled with the excitement of people eagerly waiting at each location.
