About this event
Held on the World Natural Heritage island of Tokunoshima, "TOKUNOSHIMA TOWN PRO 2026" is a World Surf League (WSL) sanctioned event taking place for the third time this year. Over the course of 3 days from Thursday, October 8 to Saturday, October 10, 2026, on the stage of Kedokubama with its beautiful stretch of sandy beach, the competition will be held with a QS2,000 rating for both men and women, featuring a total prize purse of AUD $10,000 each for men and women. As the importance of events held in Japan increases in this season's WSL-APAC tour, this tournament occupies an important position as the opening round of the 3-event Japan Leg. Gaining recognition as a competition held in consistently sizable, high-quality conditions each year, top Asian surfers aiming to qualify for the Challenger Series (CS) will gather here. In the men's division, 2025-26 CS seeds Shohei Kato, Joh Azuchi, and Tenshi Iwami, along with Korea's Kanoa HeeJae, ISA World Junior U16 silver medalist Taro Matsuno, and many other junior surfers have entered. In the women's division, defending champion Cocona Kawase will challenge to defend her title, while Shino Matsuda, currently ranked 2nd on the Asia QS, aims to maintain her position within the CS qualification zone. Furthermore, top-ranked surfers Mirai Ikeda, Sara Wakita, and Cocoro Baba aim for top finishes to build momentum toward the second half of the tour. Having previously won in Tokunoshima during her junior career, Mirai Ikeda is anticipated as one of the favorites for victory. By having world-class top surfers compete in the ocean of Tokunoshima, this tournament serves as an opportunity to promote the island's natural environment and the charm of its sea both domestically and internationally, connecting marine conservation initiatives with international exchange through surfing. It is also hoped that seeing world-class athletes in action will inspire local children to dream of "stepping onto the global stage one day." The tournament will be live-streamed on the WSL official website/app and the tournament's official website.
