About this event

At Art Hotel Ishigakijima, "Kyubon Evening" will be held, allowing visitors to enjoy both "Eisa," a traditional seasonal feature of Kyubon (Old Bon festival), and "Angama," a traditional Yaeyama event, all at once. Eisa, a traditional performing art of Okinawa, is performed to send off and welcome the spirits of Buddhist monks returning to this world during Kyubon, with dancers parading along local streets while dancing to songs and musical accompaniment, carrying prayers for bountiful harvests, family safety, and good health. Dynamic dance performances can be expected. Meanwhile, in the traditional Yaeyama event Angama, it is believed that the old man (Ushumai) and old woman (Nmi) return from the other world to this world during Kyubon accompanied by their clan (Fama); in response to hospitality at various homes, banquets connecting the other world and this world unfold with songs, dances, and comical Q&A sessions in local dialect. Admission is free.
