Japanese name:南大東村豊年祭
📅 Tue, Sep 22, 2026 - Wed, Sep 23, 2026
About this event
The Minamidaito Village Harvest Festival is held annually on September 22 (Eve Festival) and September 23 (Main Festival) to pray for a bountiful harvest and to promote harmony and recreation among villagers. Shinto rituals are conducted village-wide, accompanied by a rich variety of events such as mikoshi (portable shrines), festival floats, sumo wrestling, and stage performances. On the night of the Main Festival in particular, food stalls, stage entertainment, and powerful Daito Taiko drumming bring immense excitement to the venue. Sumo wrestling on Minamidaito Island has a tradition dating back to the island's pioneer era; following the completion of the main Daito Shrine building, ceremonial ring entries wearing decorative aprons (kesho-mawashi) and traditional sumo-jinku hand dancing began to be performed. Daito Taiko traces its roots to Hachijo Taiko and is characterized by playing both sides of the drum freely without rigid forms, highlighting the drummer's individuality. The thrilling performances featuring rotation drumming and synchronized drumming captivate all who visit.
