About this event

The 32nd Iheya Moonlight Marathon, held in Iheya Village, Okinawa Prefecture, is a night marathon where runners cover an almost flat coastal course from evening into the night. During daylight hours, runners can enjoy pastoral and coastal scenery, eventually witnessing a beautiful sunset over the island's west coast. After dusk, participants make their way toward the finish line guided by the light of the full moon rising from the east coast and penlights. With its appeal of being easy to join for beginners who are sensitive to heat and female runners concerned about sunlight, it is a popular event where approximately 40% of runners are women. Under the catchphrase 'Starlight cheers, moonlight accompaniment,' participants can enjoy not only the marathon but also warm exchanges with the island villagers. At the annual pre-race and post-race parties, dishes such as Iheya soba and beef soup, along with cocktails made with local Terushima awamori sake, will be served, and live performances by guest artists from outside the island are scheduled. In addition, homestays within the village are accepted, allowing visitors to experience the warm local hospitality known as 'Iheya Jute.' Participants will also have a chance to win round-trip JTA airline tickets through a raffle.
