About this event
Handed down on Tarama Island as a Nationally Designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, "August Dance" (Hachigatsu Odori) is a traditional event held annually over three days from August 8 to 10 of the lunar calendar to pray for and give thanks for bountiful harvests. It is said to have originated in the 1600s when farmers who paid heavy taxes reported full payment and prayed for good harvests in the following year, passing down to this day the "folk dance" that began at celebratory gatherings where the entire village celebrated, consoled, and encouraged one another. It is the largest traditional event on Tarama Island, where the island's two districts, "Buma" and "Fima," compete in performing arts, showcasing dozens of performances including Kumiodori, Kyogen, and classical dances. The sight of children entering the world of tradition is also one of the highlights.
