The 30th Pinda Earth Tournament

Held in Tarama Village, Okinawa Prefecture, the 30th Pinda Earth Tournament is a traditional event unique to Tarama Island, where male goats engage in heated battles in the ring. The matches are divided into three weight classes: lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight. Highlights include powerful clashes between the goats and various techniques reminiscent of pro-wrestling moves, such as Maidatsu Notenwari (Crown Splitter), Zutsukioshi (Headbutt Push), and Kake-waza (Lock Techniques). Another key highlight is the uniquely individual names given to the goats filled with their owners' affection, featuring names like Pikachu-go and Garagaradon-go. Aiming to promote goat production and tourism, admission to the tournament is free on the day of the event. An awards ceremony will be held after the competition, presenting the winners with a championship flag, certificate of merit, goat feed, and prize money. In addition, as attendees depart on the ferry, Tarama folk songs are played while islanders send off participants with paper tape throwing and dancing. The event pamphlet features introductions to the competing goats and enthusiasm from their owners, allowing visitors to appreciate the event's charm more deeply. Visitors can also enjoy local food such as goat soup and take in the relaxing, pristine scenery of Okinawa during their trip to Tarama Island.
