About this event
A special appreciation performance of "Kumiodori", a traditional Okinawan performing art designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and a National Important Intangible Cultural Property, will be held. Part 1 features Ryukyu Dance, and Part 2 features the Kumiodori play "Shushin Kaneiri". With commentary and subtitles for dialogue and lyrics, the content can be enjoyed by anyone. Celebrating the milestone 30th anniversary of Miyako City and Tarama Village, Okinawa Prefecture, establishing sister city ties, this serves as an opportunity to deepen the bonds between both communities and widely introduce Okinawa's proud traditional culture. Visitors can savor in Miyako the performing arts culture of Okinawa that has been continuously handed down even across great distances. Kumiodori is a traditional Okinawan musical dance-drama combining dialogue, song, and dance; it was first created and performed in 1719 to entertain envoys of the Chinese Emperor, and developed while incorporating elements from Japanese Noh and Kabuki.
