Kuji Autumn Festival
Japanese name:久慈秋まつり
📅 Thu, Sep 17, 2026 - Sun, Sep 20, 2026
About this event
Boasting a history and tradition dating back to the 1360s, this is the largest festival in northern Iwate Prefecture. It is said to have originated as a prayer and expression of gratitude for bountiful harvests and protection from disasters. The biggest highlight is the parade of floats creatively crafted every year by all 8 float guilds in the city. The joint procession featuring mikoshi (portable shrines) and handmade floats that rise to a height of approximately 12 meters parading down the city's main street is full of power. At the eve-of-festival event held the day before, the floats and portable shrines gather all together, and festival music echoes throughout the town.
