About this event
The 2026 "Japan's Hometown Tono Festival" will be held on September 19 (Sat) and 20 (Sun) in the city center and at Tono-go Hachimangu Shrine. This festival aims to pass down Tono's precious treasure of local traditional performing arts to the next generation, while also revitalizing the community as the city's largest event with full citizen participation. On the first day, an opening ceremony, local performing arts parade, Shishi Odori mass dance, and joint local performing arts and kagura performances are scheduled. On the second day, following the opening proceedings, Tono Nanbu Yabusame (horseback archery), a procession around the riding grounds, and joint kagura performances will take place. With more than 60 traditional performing arts groups in Tono City, the festival conveys the region's charm. In preparation for performing at the festival, various groups are recruiting participants for dancers, taiko drummers, and flute players, offering an opportunity to experience Tono's folk performing arts firsthand.
