Tsunagi no Sato Daimyo Procession

About this event

This is a historic festival handed down in Tome City, said to have started in Eiroku 7 (1564) when Kasai Minbusho, lord of Hatooka Castle, rebuilt Hachiman Shrine. Signaled by conch shells and fireworks, the procession is led by a tsuyuharai (path clearer) dressed in hakama, followed by mounted vanguards, dochu bugyo (magistrates), and yakko carrying hasamibako (luggage boxes) and feather spears, forming a grand historical picture scroll with about 100 participants including a procession of children in costume. Among them, "Otorigae", the tossing and exchanging of feather spears over 3 meters long, is a major highlight. This festival is carried out by the people of Yonekawa Tsunagizawa and is said to originate from the lineage of the Orikabe Daimyo Procession in Iwate Prefecture. In Genji 1 (1864), a complete set of procession equipment was handed down from Hachiman Shrine in Tome Teraike, and the tradition has been preserved to this day, designated as an intangible folk cultural property of Tome City.
