About this event

Held at the Kakinoshima Historic Site, a constituent asset of the World Cultural Heritage site 'Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan', the Hakodate Jomon Festival 2026 in Kakinoshima is an event where visitors can experience the Jomon period with all five senses. At the venue, the 'Jomon Marche' will feature food from local restaurants and kitchen cars, specialty kelp products, freshly caught fish, and fresh vegetables. As Jomon hands-on experiences, visitors can enjoy making magatama (comma-shaped beads), fire-making, and archery target shooting. On stage, presentations by local children and students, a Jomon talk show by Kuniko Kitagawa and Chiharu Abe, and balloon art by balloon performer Kick will be featured. At the adjacent Hakodate City Jomon Culture Center, in addition to the popular annual experience of holding the hollow clay figurine (Chuku-dogu), in 2026 visitors can also touch a replica of Hachinohe City's National Treasure 'Gassho Dogu' (praying clay figurine). There is also a quiz rally exploring the Ofune Site (limited quantity, first-come, first-served), full of programs that make Jomon history feel accessible. In case of rain on the day, some events may be held at the Minamikayabe General Center.
