About this event
A traditional festival held annually from September 7 to 9 in Kakunodate-machi, Semboku City. Designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, the "Kakunodate Matsuri no Yama Gyoji" takes place in conjunction with the festivals of Shinmei-sha Shrine and Yakushido Temple. The spectacle of large floats decorated with warrior dolls and Kabuki figures sent out by 18 neighborhoods, being gallantly pulled through the atmospheric townscape dating back to the Edo period, is breathtaking. Elegant hand dances performed to the accompaniment of Oyama Hayashi music and the "Yama-buttsuke" float collisions are major highlights of the festival, making it a compelling event brimming with the passion of local residents and living tradition.
