About this event

Counted as one of the Three Great Bon Dances of Akita Prefecture, the "Ichiizaki Bon Dance" is held annually over three days from August 18 to 20 along the Ichiizaki Shopping Street. Its history is long, with tradition holding that it took its current form around 1662 (Kanbun 2) when a post station (shukuba) and relay horse facility (godenbasho) were established in Hachirogata Town. While various dances existed in the past, over many years it transformed from a "dance to watch" into a popularized "dance to participate in." Today, three styles are handed down: the fast-paced "Dendenzuku Dance" and "Kitasaka Dance," as well as the elegant "Sankatsu Dance" brought from the capital. Dancers dressed in yukata or colorful costumes singing and dancing to the sounds of taiko drums and flutes captivate many people as a classic summer tradition. In the dance competition, performances are showcased across various categories including general individuals, general groups, junior high school groups, local neighborhood groups, and out-of-town participants, with a children's Bon dance also held starting at 7:20 PM. In fiscal year 2026 (Reiwa 8), the prize money for the overall competition will be upgraded to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the town's founding.
