Horetsu Shrine Annual Grand Festival
Japanese name:豊烈神社例大祭
📅 Tue, Oct 6, 2026
About this event
This annual grand festival is held every year on October 6, the death anniversary of Lord Tadamoto Mizuno, the first lord of the Mizuno Domain, at Horetsu Shrine in Yamagata City. The greatest highlight of this festival is "Dakyu" (traditional Japanese equestrian ball game), which is designated as a Yamagata Prefecture Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Ancient Dakyu is recognized as one of Japan's three remaining Dakyu traditions alongside those of the Imperial Household Agency and Hachinohe, representing a traditional performing art maintained for more than 200 years since the Edo period. The festival features a mikoshi (portable shrine) procession, Yamagata Horetsu Dakyu, a dedicatory kendo tournament, and kachi-dakyu (on-foot Dakyu), allowing visitors to directly experience local history and traditional culture.
