About this event
The "Hassaku Festival" held in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, is a festival boasting 1,400 years of history and tradition. Mountain ascetics (yamabushi) who have entered the sacred mountain offer prayers at Hachiko Shrine, which enshrines the founder Prince Hachiko, followed by the Grand Saitou Goma fire ritual. This Goma fire is lit by the yamabushi, illuminating the summit of Mount Haguro at night, and the sight of the blazing flames is truly sublime. The festival provides a mystical and solemn experience where the faith and traditions of the mountain ascetics come alive.
