About this event

Boasting Japan's top history, technique, and culture, the Nanyo Chrysanthemum Festival is backed by a history of chrysanthemum cultivation dating back to the Uesugi Clan era. Chrysanthemum dolls were first displayed in the 1st year of the Taisho era (1912), followed by a chrysanthemum exhibition the following year, giving it the longest history in Japan for a chrysanthemum festival featuring chrysanthemum dolls with over 100 years of history. The 114th edition will be held at two venues: the Miyauchi Venue (around Kumano Taisha Shrine) and the Flower Park Venue (Nanyo City Central Flower Park). At the Miyauchi Venue, visitors can appreciate flower art using fresh chrysanthemum flowers decorating the grounds of Kumano Taisha Shrine and chrysanthemum-filled water basins (hanachozu), while enjoying the harmony of ancient paths and art. At the Flower Park Venue, visitors can admire chrysanthemum flowers carefully cultivated as if competing in traditional techniques. The gorgeous landscape unique to Nanyo, the town of chrysanthemums, unfolds as a fusion of skills passed down through generations of the Kikuchi family of chrysanthemum doll artisans and cultivation techniques developed over many years.
