About this event

'Yamagata Gassan SEA TO SUMMIT 2026' is an environmental sports event where participants experience the cycle of nature through outdoor sports. By advancing from the sea (kayak) to the village (bicycle) and then to the summit of Mt. Gassan (hike/climb) using only human power, the event provides an opportunity to reflect on the cycle of nature and think about our irreplaceable environment. The event takes place over 2 days; on Day 1, an environmental symposium on the theme of 'Coexistence of People, Society, and Nature' will be held, featuring keynote lectures inviting speakers from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and weather forecasters. On Day 2, an activity aiming for the 1,984-meter summit of Mt. Gassan starting from the Lake Gassan Canoe Sprint Course will take place. Participants navigate through the 3 stages—kayak, bike, and hike—under their own power. Various participation categories are available, including solo division, team division, and para-challenge division, allowing participants to take on the challenge according to their physical strength and abilities. It will be a valuable experience to fully enjoy the rich nature nurtured by one of Japan's heaviest snowfall regions.
