About this event
This is a national competition where you can experience Dodoitsu, a traditional performing art originating in Hitachiota City. In the singing division, open to junior high school students and older, participants perform set songs and free-choice songs, and awards including the Dodoitsu Grand Prize are presented. In the lyric-writing division, Dodoitsu lyrics are invited across general and student divisions, with various awards offered. A raffle with deluxe prizes will also be held, and joining midway is permitted. Dodoitsu is a form of short poetic literature based on 26 syllables structured in 7-7-7-5, established in the first year of Bunka (1804) by the first Senka Dodoitsubo, who was born in Isobe Village, Kuji District, Hitachi Province (present-day Isobe-cho, Hitachiota City). It is also a type of folk song sung to the accompaniment of the shamisen. Characterized by witty and humorous expressions that depict nature while skillfully incorporating social satire, it is cherished by many enthusiasts.
