About this event
Held at the Tochigi City Museum of Art, the special exhibition "Popular Artists and Animals Gathered Together: Ukiyo-e of Animals" focuses on animals depicted in ukiyo-e prints, which were widely loved by people from the Edo period to the Meiji period. In ukiyo-e, not only kabuki actors and landscapes but also animals interacting with humans served as important subject matter. This exhibition offers a glimpse into the social conditions of the time through the adorable, humorous depictions of animals, as well as those used to convey satire and current events, created by popular artists such as Harunobu Suzuki, Utamaro Kitagawa, Hiroshige Utagawa, Hokusai Katsushika, and Kuniyoshi Utagawa. Please enjoy the rich and diverse world of animals portrayed by popular ukiyo-e masters.
