Secret Festival of Shiobara Onsen: Ancient Hot Spring Water Festival

The Shiobara Onsen Koshiki Yumatsuri (Ancient Hot Spring Water Festival) is a traditional festival held in Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture. This festival honors the history and culture of Shiobara Onsen and gives thanks for the blessings of the hot springs. On the day, beginning with the Sacred Water Drawing Ceremony at Motoyu Onsen, the Sacred Water Dedication is conducted at Shiobara Hachiman Shrine. Afterward, the Water Distribution Procession continuing from Naka-Shiobara to Yuppo no Sato is carried out, enlivening the hot spring town. Finally, the festival reaches its climax with the Water Distribution Ceremony at Yuppo no Sato. In addition, miko maiden dance dedications and traditional ohayashi musical accompaniments are presented, further livening up the festival. This festival is a valuable opportunity to feel the rich waters of Shiobara Onsen and the warmth of the local people.
