About this event
Featuring a mesmerizing sea of 10,000 lantern lights, the 30th Takasaki Kannonyama Mando-e Candle Festival is a traditional event held annually to dedicate lantern lights to the Buddha and pray for atonement, virtue, and the fulfillment of wishes. In Kannonyama, over 10,000 votive lantern lights imbued with wishes are laid out from Kannon Street to the Byakue Dai-Kannon statue and the temple grounds as offerings to Kannon. The lanterns and lights offered with ancestral memorials and personal wishes remind visitors of everyday gratitude. Celebrating its 30th edition, this year's festival also includes prayers for the warding off of epidemics. In support of the future of the Byakue Dai-Kannon, which marks the 90th anniversary of its construction, appeals are being made for contributions to the Rebuilding Fund through sutra-copying offerings. On the day of the event, lantern memorial services, Enko-kuguri (halo ring passing ritual), and Goma fire rituals will be conducted, beautifully coloring the end of Takasaki's summer.
