About this event
Held in Fujioka City, Gunma Prefecture, the "Fujioka Festival" is a citizen-participatory summer festival carrying on the traditions of the historic Gion festivals of Suwa Shrine and Fuji Sengen Shrine. In 2026, it will be held from Saturday, September 26 to Sunday, September 27. On the first day, parades of children's mikoshi, adult mikoshi, and shrine mikoshi will take place, and around 500 participants in yukata will perform the "Fujioka Ondo" during the "Grand Dance Procession." On the second day, 13 Gion festival floats will parade through the city streets, and visitors can also enjoy "Dance Fujioka Woo-Ha!", dancing to a lively samba arrangement of the "Fujioka Ondo." Traditionally, the "Fujioka Wakatobi-kai Ladder Acrobatic Performance" also appears on Sunday to liven up the festival. The main highlight of the festival is the powerful procession of the Gion floats. As a countermeasure against severe heat in recent years, the timing of the event was moved from its traditional August date to September, emphasizing safety. With local product fairs also held, it is a seasonal tradition marking the end of summer that colors the streets of Fujioka.
