About this event

The Tomioka Lantern Festival will be held in Tomioka City, Gunma Prefecture. Set in a place where silk threads were once spun, this Japanese-style lantern event weaves people's wishes into threads of light toward the sky. Under the theme 'Hyakki Yako' (Night Procession of a Hundred Looms), visitors can enjoy photo spots and workshops while strolling through Tomioka's townscape that preserves the charm of the Meiji era. In the workshops, you can try crafting your own lantern or bamboo lantern. Lantern purchasers will receive 1,000 yen worth of special currency usable at participating stores in Tomioka City. Enjoy walking around the town and visiting lanterns and Halloween-themed photo spots scattered throughout the city. Starting at 17:30, the 'Hyakki Yako (Parade)' in costume will wind through the streets, and the finale will take place at the World Heritage Tomioka Silk Mill, where lanterns carrying wishes are released into the night sky all at once. Along with a musical performance by the Tomioka High School Brass Band Club, silver medalists at the Gunma Prefectural Wind Band Competition, you can enjoy a fantastical finale. Together with the concurrently held Tomioka Halloween Fest, it is an event where you can fully enjoy autumn in Tomioka.
