Higashiagatsuma Mukashimichi MTB Ride 2026

About this event

Held in the northern area of Mount Haruna in Higashiagatsuma Town, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture, the "Higashiagatsuma Mukashimichi MTB Ride 2026" is an event where participants ride mountain bikes along "old paths" (mukashimichi) that were once used by pedestrians, carts, and horses, but are no longer in regular use today. Distinctive paths that differ from modern roads—such as steep slopes, narrow trails along cliffs, and rocky tracks—are maintained and combined with surrounding forest roads to form the course. This event is not merely a race; participants tackle a distance of approximately 41 km and a cumulative elevation gain of around 1,400 m while enjoying the beautiful surrounding satoyama landscapes. Downhill sections are primarily unpaved singletracks, while climbs include paved roads and unpaved doubletracks. On satoyama paths where coexistence with local residents and hikers is essential, riders can experience the appeal of these areas as habitats for mountain bikers. As a town-wide project, it is also expected to contribute to measures against regional aging and population decline, aiming to introduce the charms of the town through the event. Participants can feel the rich nature and history of Higashiagatsuma Town by riding through courses that utilize natural terrain.
