Tatsuo Kawaguchi: Relation - Non-relation at the Lakeside

An exhibition by Tatsuo Kawaguchi, one of Japan's leading contemporary artists who has continued thinking and creating at the forefront of contemporary art for more than half a century centered on the concept of "relation." This exhibition features new works inspired by the museum's architectural space and its lakeside surroundings, as well as unreleased works created at his studio in Boso. From insects to the cosmos, from the Jurassic period to the present—visitors can enjoy a world of works guided by Kawaguchi's vigorous creative drive and fresh curiosity confronting all existence and time, sustained since the 1960s. In particular, the new site-specific installation inspired by the museum's architecture and the "lakeside" incorporates the exhibition rooms overlooking the lake and the unique architectural space not merely as a background, but as an entity that guides creation, allowing the scenery, light, and the space itself to quietly resonate with the artwork. The new relationship born from this connects the viewer's body and gaze to the artwork, creating a space that can only be experienced in this location. Furthermore, among the unreleased works nurtured at the Boso studio, works are exhibited that quietly direct a gaze toward familiar activities of life, bodily changes, and the daily accumulation of time, sublimating them into art. The time of life carved by creatures visiting the Boso studio and the momentary pulsations of his own body appear as artworks, allowing one to feel a gaze toward time extending from small existences before one's eyes to the distant past and future. In addition, the present state of Kawaguchi's half-century of thought concerning "relation" is introduced, showcasing his enduring thoughts explored since the 1960s and the ever-expanding world of expression arising from them. This exhibition is also an homage to the late art critic Yusuke Nakahara.
