About this event
Held at Hanazono Shrine in Shinjuku Ward, the 2026 Reiwa 8 Shinjuku Tori-no-Ichi is a traditional festival wishing for business prosperity and good fortune. Boasting a history dating back to the Meiji period, it shows great liveliness, drawing as many as 600,000 visitors in typical years. At Tori-no-Ichi, open-air stalls selling decorated bamboo rakes (kumade) stand packed closely together, bustling with worshippers seeking new rakes. In particular, Hanazono Shrine's Tori-no-Ichi features the freak show tent / sideshow booth (Misemonogoya), a famous attraction rarely seen anywhere else where visitors can experience a Showa retro atmosphere. Unique performances are showcased at the sideshow booth, offering surprise and entertainment to visitors. Located in the bustling downtown area of Shinjuku, access is convenient, making it a familiar autumn tradition for many people. On the day of the event, it is held from around 12:00 PM until around 2:00 AM the following day, with an eve festival also taking place.
