About this event
This is an experiential hiking tour exploring the collapse caldera of Mount Oyama on Miyakejima, created by the major eruption in 2000. Island resident guides certified as Tokyo Nature Guides will guide visitors through this rare caldera, which spans approximately 1.6 km in diameter and 500 m in depth. During the tour, participants hike up to near the crater rim (up to 100 meters before the crater according to village regulations) while listening to stories about life on Miyakejima, experiences during the eruption, and disaster preparedness. The designated route includes climbing up and down 600 steps, providing a valuable opportunity to learn about volcanic disaster prevention while experiencing magnificent nature. Participation requirements include being 18 years of age or older, having sufficient physical fitness to walk the designated route, and following the guide's instructions. The tour is held multiple times in October and November, and the participation fee includes guide fees, domestic travel accident insurance, and equipment rental fees. Applications are accepted through the electronic ticketing service Peatix.
