About this event

The Hiratsuka Museum of Art will hold the "110th Anniversary of Birth: Kudo Kojin Exhibition - Poems of the Northern Land and Life." This is a retrospective exhibition commemorating the 110th anniversary of the birth of painter Kojin Kudo (1915-2011), who maintained an atelier in Hiratsuka for a long time and opened up new horizons in postwar Nihonga (Japanese-style painting). Born in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, Kojin Kudo embarked on his path as a painter, poetically depicting the harsh nature of the northern land and the radiance of life breathing within it, building a unique world where fantasy and reality resonate with each other. This exhibition displays about 90 representative works from his early to late years all in one place, looking back on his 70-year painting career. Please enjoy his fresh sensibility and exquisite use of beautiful colors in this full-scale retrospective, the first in Kanagawa Prefecture in 35 years. Although Kojin Kudo's prewar works from his earliest period have been lost, introducing the works of artists who were active alongside Kojin Kudo before the war highlights what Kojin aimed for in his creation while showing the plastic continuity from the prewar to postwar periods. As a retrospective exhibition at an art museum, it has been 19 years since the one held in Aomori Prefecture, the painter's hometown.
