📅 Sun, Sep 13, 2026
About this event
"Niigata Odori" showcases the traditional performing arts of Furumachi geigi, handed down through the "Furumachi Karyukai" geisha culture that represents Niigata. In Niigata, which has flourished as a port town since the Edo period, entertainment districts developed against a backdrop of exchanges of people, goods, and culture, nurturing Furumachi geigi arts such as dance, nagauta singing, and shamisen music. In this performance, all Furumachi geigi will appear to present their refined arts, evoking the atmosphere, elegance, and history of the port city Niigata. Please enjoy this gorgeous stage that conveys Niigata's geisha culture to the present day. Choreography and staging are directed by Jushiro Ichiyama, the 7th-generation head of the Ichiyama School of Japanese Classical Dance, who is a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property and has instructed Furumachi geigi across five generations. Please savor the polished, refined artistry of the Furumachi geigi.
